Apple smartwatches are valued for their sleek design and precise sensor functionality, with many useful features. Even the stripped-down versions of these smartwatches are significantly more interesting than similar products from other manufacturers. The SE series is considered a simplified version of the more expensive watches, with the first generation released in 2020. It was introduced alongside the Watch Series 6. However, even when comparing both versions, the SE does not fall significantly short of the more expensive counterpart in terms of functionality.
Before the presentation, many assumed that the budget SE series watches would be made of plastic. However, Apple did not go this route, and the device is made from recycled plastic, so there is no outward hint of cheapness.
The watch features a fairly good display – a Retina LTPO OLED with a maximum brightness of up to 1000 nits.
The device is available in 2 sizes: 44 mm and 40 mm. The first generation of watches was launched with WatchOS 7, featuring animated dials. The watch has good water and dust resistance, allowing submersion in water up to 50 meters.
In terms of sensors, the SE series is very similar to the Watch Series 3. The device can detect abnormal heart rate deviations. It features an SOS signal function and fall detection alerts. The Noise app warns of high ambient noise levels. The device's altimeter is always on and determines the user's altitude above sea level. One of the most important functions is GPS, and it also has a compass, which is useful for long and distant hikes. Additional sensors include a light sensor and a gyroscope.
The device is powered by a 2-core 64-bit S5 chipset, exactly the same as in the Watch Series 5. This puts the SE series watches on par with premium devices in terms of performance and power. This processor is 50% faster than the S3. It has 32 GB of memory, compared to 8 GB in the Watch Series 3.
The smartwatch features a high-quality microphone and improved speakers. There will be no inconvenience when listening to messages or taking incoming calls. The device is equipped with Bluetooth version 5.0, one of the stable versions.
The battery life is sufficient for up to 18 hours of use. If all unused apps are closed and the device is switched to power-saving mode, it can last about 2 days.
