In the second month of 2023, the S23 ULTRA model was released with a progressive central chipset and a luxurious diagonal of a whopping 6.8 inches. Naturally, most people wonder whether they should upgrade from the predecessor - the S22 ULTRA to the updated version?
Technical Specifications
In comparison to its predecessor, the S23 ULTRA has received the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, whereas the previous model had version 1 of the chipset. In this series, the manufacturer has opted out of in-house chipsets solely for economic reasons. The updated variant shows a 49% increase in performance in synthetic tests. Thanks to the chipset, the phone has received a faster type of RAM - LPDDR 5 and UFS 4.0 for storage, whereas the predecessor had version 3.1, allowing for maximized data exchange and transfer speed.
The updates have not affected the battery capacity, which remains at 5000 mAh, along with 45W fast charging and 9W wireless charging.
External Features and Display
Formally, the newer model has not received significant changes. However, the protective glass has been upgraded to Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which is more resistant to mechanical damage.
Significant changes in the ergonomics of the body. The curvature angle has changed, so now the S Pen does not slip off the edge. The camera block on the back has not changed, so it is difficult to distinguish between comparable models externally. The color schemes have also remained unchanged.
Externally, the displays of the two models are indistinguishable, and their characteristics have not changed. However, due to algorithm improvements, the S23 ULTRA screen is still better.
The speakers have not changed; there are 2 – Dolby Atmos. Protection rating – IP 68.
Cameras
The main camera of the updated version also has 4 modules, just like its predecessor. However, last year's gadget received a main module of 200 MP, compared to 108 MP in the predecessor. The ultra-wide remained at 12 MP, as well as the 2 telephoto lenses at 10 MP each. Thanks to the increased power of the main module, the 2023 model copes better with more complex conditions, but in normal, bright lighting, both cameras perform equally well.
The selfie camera is only 12 MP, although its predecessor had 40 MP. It is not clear what the manufacturer was guided by, but the fact remains.
It cannot be said that the S23 ULTRA model received innovative changes compared to its predecessor; however, performance has increased, the resolution of the main camera has increased to 200 MP, and the quality of video recording in 8K format has improved.
