iPhone 18 Pro Max: Large Display, a New Approach to the Camera
The iPhone 18 Pro Max continues the top tier of the Pro lineup, but this time Apple has placed noticeably more emphasis on the camera, battery life, and sustained performance rather than exterior changes. Compared with the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the display has barely changed: a 6.9-inch diagonal, ProMotion up to 120 Hz, and peak outdoor brightness of up to 3000 nits. Therefore, the increase in brightness is 0%. However, the claimed video playback time has increased from 39 to 45 hours — approximately 15.4%. Thickness remains unchanged at 8.8 mm, while weight has increased from 231 to 249 g, or by 18 g, approximately 7.8%. The main change is the camera: the 48 MP Fusion main camera now features a variable aperture, while the ultra-wide-angle and telephoto modules also use 48 MP sensors. Apple does not provide a percentage increase in detail or dynamic range, so it is more accurate to evaluate the improvement through real-world scenes. This iPhone is particularly interesting for photographers, those who shoot a lot of video, gamers, and anyone who spends an entire day away from a power outlet.
The Large Body Has Become Even Heavier
The dimensions of the iPhone 18 Pro Max are 163.4 × 78 × 8.8 mm. Compared with the previous model, the dimensions have barely changed, but the additional 18 g is noticeable when holding the smartphone in one hand for an extended period. The solid aluminum body is combined with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and ceramic protection on the back. The surface does not look excessively glossy, so fingerprints are less distracting from the device itself. At the same time, the balance remains predictable: the camera protrudes, but does not constantly cause the smartphone to rock when placed on a table. In the hand, it is still a large device, better suited to two-handed typing or photo editing. On the other hand, the large body provides additional internal space for the battery and the new cooling system, which ultimately affects not only battery life but also sustained performance.
6.9-Inch OLED and a Camera with Variable Aperture
The Super Retina XDR display retains a resolution of 2868 × 1320 pixels, a pixel density of 460 ppi, and an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. In sunlight, the screen remains readable thanks to peak brightness of 3000 nits, while the anti-reflective coating further reduces reflections. Colors look vivid without appearing overly saturated, and the 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio is particularly noticeable when viewing HDR video. The main news is found in the cameras. The 48 MP main module features a variable aperture with settings of f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0. This means users can not only automatically adjust exposure but also have greater control over depth of field. The ultra-wide-angle camera has also been upgraded to 48 MP, while the telephoto camera uses a 48 MP sensor, 4x optical zoom, and a tetraprism. When shooting in the evening, the wider aperture helps capture more light, while closing the aperture in bright conditions allows for more precise control over depth of field. Optical stabilization and Focus Pixels help preserve detail when shooting subjects in motion.
A20 Pro: More Than Enough Performance
At the heart of the smartphone is the A20 Pro, manufactured using a 2 nm process. Its six-core CPU is paired with a seven-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple claims up to 40% higher graphics performance compared with the A19 Pro and 50% greater memory bandwidth. In real-world scenarios, this means less about opening Telegram faster and more about having additional headroom for 4K video editing, on-device AI features, and demanding games. The new vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the cooling system in the iPhone 17 Pro and enables up to 40% higher sustained performance. As a result, frame rates should drop less after several gaming sessions. For YouTube, social media, music, and GPS, there is plenty of performance available, while demanding tasks make fuller use of the chip's capabilities.
iOS 26 and the New Generation of Siri AI
The software is built around iOS 26. The interface retains its familiar logic but features a more expressive Liquid Glass design and redesigned controls. The main difference is the further development of Apple Intelligence: Siri AI is expected to understand context better, while some tasks are processed directly on the device. Combined with the new Neural Engine, this affects photo editing, object recognition, and text-related tasks. The camera has also become more flexible, with dedicated Pro settings for shutter speed, white balance, aperture, and histogram. For audio, there are stereo speakers, Spatial Audio, and Dolby Atmos. The device also features Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and the new C2 modem, which, according to Apple, provides higher download speeds with lower power consumption.
45 Hours of Video and a More Relaxed Day
Battery life has become one of the most noticeable changes. Apple claims up to 45 hours of video playback compared with 39 hours for the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Formally, this represents an increase of approximately 15.4%. In everyday use, the number translates into a simpler routine: several hours of YouTube, constant messaging, music, photos, GPS, and web browsing require less attention to the remaining battery percentage. Games, especially at high brightness and maximum graphics settings, consume power considerably faster, but the new cooling system helps maintain performance at the same time. Fast charging can provide up to 50% in approximately 15 minutes when using a 60 W or higher power adapter, while MagSafe can reach 50% in around 30 minutes. As a result, the large body justifies itself not only through the display size but also through the additional energy capacity.
What Remains After Several Days
After several days of use, the iPhone 18 Pro Max feels like a model where the main changes are hidden inside. The display has not become brighter, the body has not become thinner, and the weight has even increased to 249 g. However, the camera has become more flexible, the A20 Pro maintains high performance for longer, and the battery provides approximately 15% more video playback time. For photographers, the new variable aperture offers greater control; gamers can benefit from more stable graphics; and those who travel frequently will appreciate the additional battery capacity when using GPS and mobile connectivity. For a student, this level of performance will probably be more than necessary, but for extended work, photography, and multimedia, it feels quite natural. The main compromise remains the same — the huge body and noticeable weight. Therefore, upgrading from the iPhone 17 Pro Max makes the most sense for the camera, battery life, and performance rather than for the exterior changes.
