Apple Watch Ultra 4: Developing a Familiar Concept

Apple Watch Ultra 4 does not try to reinvent the format of rugged smartwatches. Its goal is much more practical: retain the familiar 49-mm titanium case while making everyday use less dependent on a power outlet and expanding the sensor set. Compared with Ultra 3, the changes are more internal than visual. The maximum display brightness remains at 3000 nits, meaning a 0% increase, while the claimed battery life has grown from 42 to 50 hours — approximately 19%. The difference is also noticeable in Low Power Mode: up to 84 hours versus 72. Therefore, Ultra 4 will primarily appeal to those who train frequently, use GPS extensively, spend time traveling, or simply do not want to take their watch off every evening to charge it.

The appearance has barely changed, and this feels more like a deliberate decision than a drawback. The Grade 5 titanium case is covered by flat sapphire crystal, while the large form is designed for active use. The dimensions remain unchanged at 49×44×12 mm. Weight has increased slightly: from 61.6 to 63 grams for the Natural version and from 61.8 to 63.1 grams for the Black version. The increase of around 1.4 grams on the wrist is barely noticeable. The matte surface handles everyday contact well, while the Digital Crown and Action Button are easy to locate by touch even while moving. The fit is secure, although people with smaller wrists may still find the case large.

Display and Controls

The display does not receive a brightness increase, but the panel remains well suited to outdoor use. The LTPO3 OLED features an adaptive refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz, supports an always-on display, and reaches 3000 nits. In bright sunlight, watch-face information remains readable, while smooth interface transitions avoid any sense of stuttering. This is particularly convenient with maps: a route can be checked quickly on the wrist without taking out the phone. Ultra 3 owners should not expect a noticeable difference in image quality — the focus here is not on a new display, but on how it works together with the watch's other capabilities.

Performance and watchOS

The watch is powered by the S11 chip with a dual-core 64-bit processor and four-core Neural Engine. Ultra 3 used the S10, but Apple does not provide an exact percentage increase in performance, so artificial calculations would not be appropriate. In everyday tasks, the available performance is mainly noticeable through interface responsiveness: notifications open quickly, messages are handled without noticeable pauses, music starts almost instantly, and navigation does not make you wait. The screen remains small for gaming, so the watch is better suited to short, simple scenarios than extended gaming sessions. With GPS, workouts, music, and notifications, however, the device performs confidently.

The software experience is built around watchOS 27. The interface remains familiar to Apple Watch users, so switching from the previous model requires virtually no adjustment. Particular attention is given to intelligent features and data analysis. The system collects information about activity, sleep, and overall health, helping to assess readiness for physical exertion. The new capabilities are especially noticeable for people who train regularly: the watch gradually becomes more than just a screen for notifications, serving as a tool for monitoring personal routines.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery life is the most noticeable change. Up to 50 hours versus 42 for Ultra 3 represents an increase of approximately 19%. In Low Power Mode, the watch can run for up to 84 hours. For workouts with active route tracking, up to 25 hours is claimed in extended mode, while the maximum GPS tracking time reaches 45 hours. Fast charging also remains an important part of the experience: around 15 minutes on the charger provides up to 18 hours of regular use, while the battery can be charged to 80% in approximately 45 minutes. As a result, even a short charge before leaving home can significantly extend usage time.

After several days with Ultra 4, it becomes clear who this model is intended for. It is well suited to athletes, travelers, and users who constantly rely on GPS, notifications, music, and activity tracking. For a student, the watch can be useful for quickly checking messages and schedules, while for someone with a busy routine, the increased battery life can make a difference. At the same time, upgrading from Ultra 3 does not look essential: the case and display are practically the same. The main changes are inside — a newer processor, new capabilities for analyzing metrics, and a noticeable increase in battery life. As a result, Ultra 4 feels less like a design change and more like a measured refinement of an already familiar platform.
