In the summer of 2023, Samsung introduced the fifth generation of its foldable smartphones. The new version features an improved folding mechanism and processor, while retaining many of the capabilities available in the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
Design
The new model is slightly smaller and thinner than its predecessor, though these changes may not be very noticeable at first glance. However, you will definitely feel the difference in weight, as the new model is 10 grams lighter. Additionally, the device features an improved hinge structure that now allows it to fold completely in half without a gap. Both models, the Z Fold 4 and Z Fold 5, are water-resistant (IPX8) but not dustproof, and the new smartphone is 25% stronger thanks to its anodized aluminum frame.
One of the key improvements in the Fold 5 is the absence of a gap when the phone is folded. This innovation allows the two parts of the device to close tightly, preventing small particles from getting in and potentially damaging the flexible plastic screen.
Display
There haven't been major changes to the display in the new generation. Both models feature a crisp 6.2-inch external and 7.6-inch internal AMOLED display. The main difference in the new model is the increased screen brightness, reaching a peak of 1750 nits. Both screens can automatically adjust the refresh rate: the internal display from 1 to 120 Hz, and the external one from 48 to 120 Hz. The in-display camera is almost invisible and doesn't interfere with the user, making the smartphone more comfortable to use.
Specifications
The main differences between the Z Fold 5 and the previous model lie in their "hardware." The new gadget is equipped with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which is also used in the Galaxy S23 flagship, while the Z Fold 4 runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.
Both smartphones come with 12 GB of RAM and offer internal storage options ranging from 256 GB to 1 TB. However, the option to expand memory using microSD cards is not available in these models.
Both smartphones feature 4400 mAh batteries, ensuring stable device performance throughout the day without the need for constant recharging. The 25W fast charging feature allows for quick battery replenishment if necessary.
The Z Fold 4 initially launched with Android 12, while the Z Fold 5 comes with Android 13. Additionally, both devices support the S Pen stylus, unlocking additional capabilities for working with their large screens.
Camera
The new device uses the same camera system as its predecessor, maintaining time-tested solutions. The main camera features a 50 MP sensor, delivering excellent photo quality in any conditions. In addition, the smartphone is equipped with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, allowing for more space to be captured in the frame, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera, responsible for quality zoom.
The front-facing camera, embedded in the display inside the device, has a 4-megapixel sensor, and although its resolution is not the highest, it performs well for video calls and quick selfies. For those who want higher-quality selfies, the external display features a 10-megapixel selfie camera, providing clearer and more detailed shots.
